Glossary

Terms used across OpsLyft.

Cost types

Billed — Charges as they appear on the invoice. Upfront commitment purchases land on the day they're charged.

Amortized — Upfront and recurring commitment fees spread over the period they cover. The default in OpsLyft.

Net — Amortized cost after negotiated discounts, credits, and refunds.

Mixed — Shown when the selected providers use different cost types.

Effective cost — What a resource costs after commitments are applied.

On-demand equivalent — What a resource would cost at on-demand prices.

Platform terms

Canvas — A dashboard of widgets. Replaces v1 dashboards.

Chat — A conversation with Iris.

Coverage (tags) — The share of spend that has a value for a tag or dimension.

Coverage (commitments) — The share of eligible usage covered by Savings Plans, reservations, or CUDs.

Dataset — Business data joined to cloud cost.

Depth — How much Iris investigates: Low, Med, or High.

Dimension — A field you can filter or group by.

Dimension Studio — Where datasets are used to build new dimensions.

Evidence — How well data supports an opportunity: strong, fair, or low.

FinOps Copilot — The Iris chat panel in Cost Explorer.

Iris — The OpsLyft assistant and home page.

Lens — A persona-shaped default hierarchy: Finance, Engineering, CXO, or your own.

Owner — The person or team responsible for a resource or finding.

Provider — Anything that bills you: a cloud, data platform, Kubernetes, or an AI provider.

Signal — Something wrong with a resource: untagged, orphaned, idle, or stopped.

Unallocated — Cost with no owner.

View — A saved Cost Explorer state. Replaces v1 saved reports.

Findings

Anomaly (ANM-###) — Spend that left its expected pattern, measured in excess per day.

Burn rate — Total excess per day across running anomalies.

Opportunity (REC-####) — A way to save, measured in savings per month.

Optimisation score — A 0–100 score across Right-sized, Attached, Right tier, and Commitments.

Ticket (TKT-###) — The work that comes out of a finding.

Clawed back — A verified saving that reversed.

Realised — A saving verified in billing.

FinOps terms

Chargeback — Billing each team's budget for the cost it uses.

Showback — Showing each team what it costs, without billing it.

CUR 2.0 — AWS's Cost and Usage Report, delivered through Data Exports.

CUD — Google Cloud committed use discount.

Savings Plan — An AWS commitment to a dollar amount of usage per hour.

Reserved Instance (RI) — A commitment to a specific instance type or database for a term.

Unit cost — Cost divided by a business metric, such as cost per customer.

p10 floor — The 10th percentile of hourly usage. OpsLyft sizes commitments to it.
